Did you know At least 4000 ponytails are needed each year to make enough wigs for those living without hair as a result of
medically-induced hair loss-conditions. As soon as I opened SJ Establishment, I made the choice to be as sustainable as possible including hair cuttings. The best way to achieve that was to partner with the very cool organization SUSTAINABLE SALONS. They distribute the Ponytails to charities and local wig-makers where they become wigs for those suffering from conditions such as alopecia and cancer, or help fund other life-changing programs! As for what’s on the floor, that turns into filling for hair booms used to soak up oil spills on the Great Barrier Reef. Talk about incredible!

It can take between 20 and 25 ponytails of the same hair-type to make just one wig!!

When ponytails arrive at the Sustainable Salons depot, their team sorts and grades every ponytail by hand according to length, colour and hair type… this is why filling out your Ponytail Donation Form is necessary, it helps us get those pretty ponies to their correct destination much faster.
They send some ponytails to charitable organisations such as the Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation (AAAF) to be made into charitable wigs. As high-grade ponytails are super valuable, sometimes they are sold to be able to contribute more to these charities. They also send ponytails to local, independent wig-makers to be made into wigs. These wig-makers work directly with clients they find through connections with hospitals, and local community and support groups. These clients are mostly adults, so the wig-makers can work with shorter and coloured hair because adult hairstyles rarely require the long, virgin-condition ponytails that children’s wigs do.
This is why we are able to take all sorts of ponytails now, not just virgin hair at a rare long length. So we are able to help many more across the country.
